Essay writing is essentially a demonstration of your knowledge of global events and also your ability to analyse global trends. Next, would be some articles that debate on the purpose of the general paper. As the justification for the need of studying general paper is redundant here (since by hook or by crook we take the subject), let us look at the course aims of general paper: http://www.cie.org.uk/CIE/WebSite/UCLESData/Documents/Syllabus%2004%2005/8001_y05_sy.pdf . I have no idea as to the accuracy of this source of information as we are taking 8005 for the syllabus. What I can suppose is that we could safely assume that similar course aims will be present in both.
