School's ending very soon (on 15 Oct) and I think that we all need something to remind us of the beautiful days we have spent in Junior College as 7C.

So, I was thinking of this mass autograph book idea where everyone writes. There are a lot of ways to do it. Just a few examples here:

a) Everyone write his/her wishes for one person on one common page, and we compile 26 pages or we do it separately.
b) Everyone writes his/her wishes for different people/the class on one common page.
c) Combine a and b.
d) We can even get our teachers to write on it or write things for our nice nice teachers.

Alternatively, we can have personal autograph books instead of mass autograph books, which saves the trouble of compilation.

No matter what, it's a pity if we do not have things to remind us of the memories we have had in hwachong.

Information

Not in any particular order.
Physics (Paper 3)
Section A will consist of 6 longer structured questions based on the Core Syllabus of which candidates will answer four. Each question will carry 20 marks.

Section B wil lconsist of 4 options, each of which will consist of a variable number of questions. Each option will carry 30 marks. candidates are required to answer all questions from one of the four options. The rubric will advise candidates to spend about 40 minutes on section B.

Total marks: 110 Time given: 2 h 30 min.

I think that means that we only have to mug like 5 topics (including PoF) in great detail, but don't bet on what I say.
1. Prelim Papers
As most people check our class blog more frequently and regularly than the Electronic Messaging Board, I think I would have to update us on some recent news. The 2002 papers for Chem, Bio, Math, Phy have been uploaded to online.chs.edu.sg and they are accompanied by detailed solution schemes. Please do take some time reading them.
Oh well, I do suppose that most people have lost their passwords to the online.chs.edu.sg, and in that case I will gladly be of assistance to send the papers do you via MSN if I am near my computer.
Have a happy holiday.
2. Mid-autumn festival
Could we get a better idea of who's going for the MAF on this Saturday? It 'would' be an excellent break from our monotonous mugging. Please place your name on our lovely tag-board, and since it's stagnant and lovely, your name shouldn't be erased away too soon. (a nil reply is not required)

: bored and feeling stupid.

General Paper

General Paper is about the brilliant use of logic. Here's an old joke clearly demonstrating the point. For your reading pleasure:

The Chemistry of Hell
Subject: The chemistry of hell
The following is supposedly an actual question given on a University of Toronto chemistry mid-term. The answer by one student was so "profound" that theprofessor shared it with colleagues, via the Internet which is, of course, why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well. Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic(absorbs heatMost of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant. One student, however, wrote the following:

First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different Religions that exist in the world today. Most of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell. With birth and rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added. This gives two possibilities:

1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose.
2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.

So which is it?If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during my Freshman year that, "it will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you," and take into account the fact that I slept with her last night, then number 2 must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already frozen over. The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is therefore, extinct...leaving only Heaven thereby proving the existence of a divine being which explains why, last night, Teresa kept shouting "Oh my God."

THIS STUDENT RECEIVED THE ONLY "A"

This is a very old joke, but it captures the idea of a 'good' use of logic anyway.

For your reading pleasure.

The Chemistry of Hell
Subject: The chemistry of hell
The following is supposedly an actual question given on a University of Toronto chemistry mid-term. As such, it is vital that we possess sufficient information about the evolving world around us, so that we can formulate arguments that are more pertinent to our current world (reality) and also learn to pay attention to the tides that affect the sailing of our small little Singapore ship.

As such, attached would be a few articles that are highly successful in identifying bits of the global trend and I hope that they may be of help in one way or another. Note that there is no right nor wrong for the opinions within these articles and they are simply here to stimulate thinking. An effective argument is one that is not only structurally sound, but also one which can show maturity in thinking. The strength of the articles posted here may lie in their coherence and flow of arguments.

The download is available at: http://www.geocities.com/magix_et/GPResources.zip

Next, would be some articles that debate on the purpose of the general paper. As the justification for the need of studying general paper is redundant here (since by hook or by crook we take the subject), let us look at the course aims of general paper: http://www.cie.org.uk/CIE/WebSite/UCLESData/Documents/Syllabus%2004%2005/8001_y05_sy.pdf . I have no idea as to the accuracy of this source of information as we are taking 8005 for the syllabus. What I can suppose is that we could safely assume that similar course aims will be present in both.

Photos

Hey People!
I have uploaded some of the pictures during Tat's Birthday Celebration and also some random pictures shot long ago to http://www.pbase.com/zhuangzhou/s7c . The compre hints, in particular, were compiled after I marked your most recent compre on food (which I will return you after the BT).
For the essay paper:
1. If you encounter questions like the following? Only a life lived in the service of others is worth living. Discuss.? do not deviate from the topic phrase, which is life lived in the service of others. Even if you disagree with the statement, you have to focus on how/why a life lived only in the service of others is lacking. If you wish to mention other things in life that make it worth living, keep it to one paragraph maximum.
2. You MUST take a stand when the question asks for an agree/disagree response, but of course you do not have to agree totally with a statement. You may state that you agree with the statement, except in the cases of X and Y. Remember that BALANCE does NOT equate to giving both yes and no answers. Balance is also about considering counter-arguments, and then refuting them (refer to point 3). If a question asks you to discuss and reflect, you should still state that you might find the statement/issue more relevant (or important, or whatever, according to what the question asks) when it comes to X and Y, but not as relevant when it comes to Z. Remember to state your stand clearly in a thesis statement in your introduction.
3. Try to think of a couple of counter-arguments to refute. This will lend your essay depth.
4. If the question is about your country, you must focus on your country (i.e. Singapore). However, you may draw occasional parallels between Singapores situation and that of other countries.
5. READ THE MOST RECENT GP BULLETIN (JC2BT1 2005), especially the first few sections on writing your essay.
6. Remember to spend time (15-20 mins) PLANNING your essay.
For the comprehension:
1. Manage your time well. Many of you are left with little to no time for the summary AND the AQ. Do NOT attempt these first, but set yourself a strict time limit for the short questions, so that you have about 40-45 mins left for the summary and AQ. If you do not know how to answer a short question within the time limit you have set yourself, MOVE ON and return to it later.

2. Remember to define vocabulary words according to the form in which they come (e.g. a noun should have a definition that comes in the form of a noun!).
3. Remember those 'vocab-type' questions? There was one in the most recent food compre, but nobody defined it. The question was about a 'crisis of trust.' While you can get points for giving the context, you actually get a bonus mark for telling me what a crisis of trust actually means. Look out for such questions.
4. You're still not underlining the correct answer in the original passage, or even if you do, you end up over-summarising the original sentence, and therefore lose marks. e.g. There was a question on why the quality of British food declined in quality in the 19th century. The original answer in the passage reads, "A plausible explanation rests on the consequences of the INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION. During the 19th century, the RISING middle classes APED THE HABITS OF THE ARISTOCRACY. Titled women never went into the kitchen, so middle-class ladies abandoned cooking for MORE REFINED PURSUITS."
The words in capital letters are all key concepts, each worth half a mark. You have to paraphrase all of the keywords (I had some good attempts at replacing 'middle-class' with 'bourgeois') except "Industrial Revolution" (which by the way comes with capitalised first letters!).
Many people did not identify the concept of an increase in quantity of people who formed the bourgeoisie, nor the idea of there being more sophisticated activities than cooking.
5. Some people are still lifting too much. "Food is an emotional issue" should not be paraphrased as "People have many emotions about food." If you change the form of the word (in this case, 'emotional' to 'emotions'), it is STILL a lift.

6. Refer to the question often while responding to the AQ. Do not digress or make sweeping statements. Too many people wrote that food was important to Singapore because it helped in forging a national spirit, and that it did this because everyone shows tolerance towards other races by eating other kinds of food. (?!) Also, some even wrote that the importance of food to Singapore is due to its imported status and our dependence on these imports. This link is too
tenuous and in a way, obvious. Simply stating that food has brought diseases to society also does not demonstrate the importance of food.
Think of more directly relevant issues, like bird flu (the importance of regulating food safety), food as a part of the tourism industry (economics), certain foods that serve as symbols of Singaporean identity (e.g. 'rojak,' which describes Singaporean society precisely).
Please remember to refer to YOUR COUNTRY, I.E. SINGAPORE, in your answer. Some people are still writing generally about things that have nothing to do with Singapore (e.g. agriculture), or about things that can apply to any country in the world.
----
That's about all I can think of at the moment. Another general hint I can give is to look back at your past pieces of work (both essays and compres), and spot the patterns in your errors, both linguistic and content-wise. I am especially nearing the end of my tether with re. to recurring grammatical errors (run-on lines, subject-verb agreements, the use of the past tense, or the past perfect, where either is completely unnecessary, the use of commas to link? what should've been 2 sentences together). Practise some self-awareness: you've done numerous pieces of work, and you, not i, should know yourself best by now.
Most of all, stay calm and do not panic. You have all come a long way since last year, though the grades may not always reflect that. Most, if not all, of you have grasped the basic framework for writing a good essay and AQ. Now, you've to work on being systematic and cool under pressure... and of course, on coming up with the content to fill this framework out.
I welcome any questions from you, but do try to read the things I've suggested (or even beyond), before asking me questions. I'm available on msn at tchertan @yahoo.com (some have already added me), and you can e-mail me at that address, or tanpc @ hc.edu.sg. (oh yes. leave out the spaces!)
Oh yes, and I missed all of you and look forward to seeing you next term ;)
Good luck!
Ms Tan

Block Test Additional resources

Everyone's been mugging really hard.
So, here are a little additional resources for block tests so that you can mug even harder. There are a couple of people who we would to express our appreciation to:

Our Principal, Mr Ang, vice-principals, Mrs Chin and Mr Chan and our teacher-in-charge, without whom the event would not have been possible.

Chang Liang's parents, for providing emergency transport for the drinks and snacks we have purchased on the first day.

Chang Liang, Jackie, Cheng Shang, Jing Zhi, Yee Hwee, Liang Cheng, Bryan, Ying Jin, Enoch, for being the few earliest souls to have arrived to ship our cargo.

Bryan, Ying Jin and etc for bringing mahjong sets.

Chang Liang again, for bringing the invaluable PS 2

..... (and etc)

....

Last but not least, uncle Chong.

The above list is non-exhaustive....

The following is a newspaper extract written by one of your favourite reporters:
From 29th to 31st May, 04S7C and 05S7c hanged out at two chalets at Coasta Sands Pasir Ris, during which, your favourite reporter witnessed a couple of shocking events and uncovered a few dark secrets as well. Besides the usual mahjong playing and cards, your reporter caught a glimpse of the dark side of human nature during a game of monopoly, during which one of the juniors, Bryan, was offering irresistable deals. "If you sell me the remaining Ang Mo Kio MRT station, I would be able to collect 200 (from 100 last time) whenever someone stops at the MRT station, and I would pay you 25% of what I gain each time. In addition, you shall be exempted from paying when you land on any MRT station," exclaims Bryan, as any of the remaining colour on the faces of the other players were drained away.
Like usual, your reporter managed to take a couple of photos as well. Did you know that Jackie could dance? Oh well, it's not too late to find out now. On the very first day, your favourite reporter was absolutely horrified to see a full 6 feet Jackie dance para para. Oh well, no words can express this shock so your favourite reporter decides to put up a picture:

A further note would also be that Jackie won the top placing.
Your favourite reporter did continue his usual quest for hunting more news. The monopoly game was held after the dance put up by Jackie and after the monopoly, the players (Enoch, Yee Hwee, Jackie, Ying Jin, Bryan, Max, Liang Cheng, Jing Zhi) went for dinner at one of the food courts. And following that, they had some fun at an arcade and then pool, which would be exclusively covered in the later paragraphs.

Dinner :D

At the Arcade
Following the arcade, the team went for a game of pool. Chuan Zhi did join the team for dinner. Yee Hwee claimed not to have any experience in playing pool, and your favourite reporter witnessed some intriguing action. In addition, your favourite reporter discovered a potential future national player at the game, who was only too humble when interviewed.

That's Jackie teaching Yee Hwee pool. Oh yah, did your favourite reporter mention that the team was playing pairs?

And this is Max displaying the jump ball technique. Pretty cool, ain't it. As your favourite reporter says, there is always some hidden talent in s7c.
After the game of pool, your favourite reporter followed the team back to the chalet and it was already ten plus (or so). Then, everyone began to do weird things:

Max, Bryan and Jing Zhi were found to be in weird positions.

Si Hao and Qing Yuan were deeply fascinated by the advent of modern technology.

Jing Zhi's friends also celebrated her birthday with her and your favourite reporter saw them indulging in wine. Oh well, they are eighteen already, aren't they?
The first day then concluded with some people going off to see stars and some people playing mahjong throughout the night. Your favourite reporter didn't manage to capture any picture of the illegal activity due to some technical difficult (aka your favourite reporter has erm indulged in some highly entertaining activity as well).
On the second day, more people joined in. Your favourite reporter had a terrible time memorizing names and so shall not list the people who joined in on the second day. On the second day, quite a couple of people (Serene, Shiqi and company) went to witness the sun rise as well, while the mahjong tiles continued motion in the way Newton has defined it to be.
The highlight of the second day was naturally the bbq, and the little birthday party s7c decided to throw for Jing Zhi.

Elijah was munching on food.

Your favourite reporter declares that the bbq isn't entirely vegetarian and goes berserk!

Stephanie was on skates.

Jing Zhi had a birthday party and was very delighted. Your favourite reporter wonders what she wished for.

In general, the chalet was very well-received and your favourite reporter......
P.S. Some censorship was performed on this article due to restrictions set by the XXX Agency. In addition, the article had greatly exceeded in length and the newspaper company certainly cannot afford to publish such long articles.

The following is an extract from an advertisement:
The award winning Paparazzi studio is proud to offer you the chance to be the next American model. For exams, block tests, so that we can grow up to serve our country. Fullstop.

There isn't a single hint of self nurture or enrichment in the education system of Singapore today. Almost everywhere, everyone else is merely receiving education so that we can handle exams and achieve the highly sought after "A"s. To those who are purely after seeking knowledge, my sincerest salutes to you though you are but the minority. And to those who can persevere right through the end just to get your 'A's, my ultimate respect for your drive and will.

The highly competitive quest for excellence in academics and CCAs has turned both students and teachers alike to be very rigid and uncompromising. Every single detail has to be known and MEMORIZED just for the sake of exams. Anything else outside the syllabus is booed at when brought up in class. What in the world are we coming to? It is therefore no wonder why us students today dislike studying- we are schooled, not educated.

Teachers, it is time to consider your methods of teaching. It is true that you've been through this vicious cycle, so why are you now putting it all into us? Memorize this, memorise that, copy this, copy that.. It is understandable if regrettable that the tasks of teachers today is to churn out A* students or face demotion. This is the cruel fact which we all cannot change. So the least that we can do is to make the classroom environment a little more homely and fun. Lessons should cease to be just flashing of the transparency and telling us what to memorize or copy, we are here to learn knowledge, not expand our brain capacity.

And for those governing our education system at the helm, T.S. it is time that you seriously consider the fundamentals of education before trying to make us into all rounded students. Creativity. How do you expect us to be creative just overnight? And be taught creativity when our teachers are also products of this rigid education system. PWs and PEARLS don't help a single bit.

Just a little opinion from a student mugging for block tests.. Dun bother guessing the author, think of the serious ideas highlighted. =)

Tat's Dedication

Hey guys, here's a song Tat Chong wishes to dedicate to all those girls he's loved before. Tat Chong and Chloe had enjoyed themselves thoroughly on Christmas night with one whole roasted turkey and one whole slab of top quality ham to themselves. After they had eaten their fill, they decided to get intimate. They were so engrossed in being intimate, they forgot about the time and soon, it was morning. On Boxing Day, the tsunami hit the shore they were at and by the time they noticed it, it was too late. The tsunami had swept them into the vast Selat Melaka. "Help Tat, help! I can't swim!" Chloe cried. "Don't worry Qi'er . I'm coming!"Tat Chong replied as he struggled to swim against the strong currents to his beloved. Finally, Tat Chong reached Chloe but it was to late. Chloe was out cold. "Don't leave me Qi'er , don't leave me!" Tat Chong cried with tears gushing out of his eyes. As luck would have it, Tat Chong spotted a wooden door close by. It had been swept out by the tsunami. Tat Chong laid Chloe on the door and performed CPR on her. Just as all seemed bleak, Chloe opened her eyes. "Thank you, God," Tat Chong said. Just then, a plastic bag containing some stale food and water floated by. Tat Chong grabbed the plastic bag and laid it beside Chloe. Together they floated on the sea for one week, surviving only on the stale food and limited amounts of water. Just as they thought all hope was lost, they were washed to shore. "Where is this place?" they asked each other. As they combed the beach, they recognised the familiar look of HDB flats. They had been swept all the way back to Singapore. "Thank you, God. Thank you," they said in unison. Romance was in the air. They checked into a cheap motel and the sounds they made would have made Mr Lee Kuan Yew smile. One up in the baby population.

S7C

S7C

the rain ****ing sux...normally i dun really like swearing but the weather is seriously ***ed. wtf man. i so wanna smack all those who are praying for rain and had their prayers answered larx. rain=can't go out, can't haf trng, get disgustingly wet, feel disgustingly humid. sun is fun! all those who complain bout the hot weather jus friggin find an air con room man. any place indoors is most prob air conditioned in sgp anw. so pls pls pls retract any prayers u've made for rain cos rain is my disdain and sun is fun.

mick

Would the haters please shut up.

Okay, i've had enough of the manu-ginobili-not-deserving-to-be-on-all-star-squad talk. i'm irate. i'm disgusted. These mothers, instead of being able to work for their honest livelihood, are forced to employ all their time in strolling to beg sustenance for their helpless infants: who as they grow up either turn thieves for want of work, or leave their dear native country to fight for the Pretender in Spain, or sell themselves to the Barbadoes.
I think it is agreed by all parties that this prodigious number of children in the arms, or on the backs, or at the heels of their mothers, and frequently of their fathers, is in the present deplorable state of the kingdom a very great additional grievance; and, therefore, whoever could find out a fair, cheap, and easy method of making these children sound, useful members of the commonwealth, would deserve so well of the public as to have his statue set up for a preserver of the nation.
But my intention is very far from being confined to provide only for the children of professed beggars; it is of a much greater extent, and shall take in the whole number of infants at a certain age who are born of parents in effect as little able to support them as those who demand our charity in the streets.

”I have been assured by a very knowing American of my acquaintance in London, that a young healthy child well nursed is at a year old a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled ...”

As to my own part, having turned my thoughts for many years upon this important subject, and maturely weighed the several schemes of other projectors, I have always found them grossly mistaken in the computation. It is true, a child just dropped from its dam may be supported by her milk for a solar year, with little other nourishment; at most not above the value of 2s., which the mother may certainly get, or the value in scraps, by her lawful occupation of begging; and it is exactly at one year old that I propose to provide for them in such a manner as instead of being a charge upon their parents or the parish, or wanting food and raiment for the rest of their lives, they shall on the contrary contribute to the feeding, and partly to the clothing, of many thousands.
There is likewise another great advantage in my scheme, that it will prevent those voluntary abortions, and that horrid practice of women murdering their bastard children, alas! too frequent among us! sacrificing the poor innocent babes I doubt more to avoid the expense than the shame, which would move tears and pity in the most savage and inhuman breast.
The number of souls in this kingdom being usually reckoned one million and a half, of these I calculate there may be about two hundred thousand couple whose wives are breeders; from which number I subtract thirty thousand couples who are able to maintain their own children, although I apprehend there cannot be so many, under the present distresses of the kingdom; but this being granted, there will remain an hundred and seventy thousand breeders. I again subtract fifty thousand for those women who miscarry, or whose children die by accident or disease within the year. There only remains one hundred and twenty thousand children of poor parents annually born. The question therefore is, how this number shall be reared and provided for, which, as I have already said, under the present situation of affairs, is utterly impossible by all the methods hitherto proposed. For we can neither employ them in handicraft or agriculture; we neither build houses (I mean in the country) nor cultivate land: they can very seldom pick up a livelihood by stealing, till they arrive at six years old, except where they are of towardly parts, although I confess they learn the rudiments much earlier, during which time, they can however be properly looked upon only as probationers, as I have been informed by a principal gentleman in the county of Cavan, who protested to me that he never knew above one or two instances under the age of six, even in a part of the kingdom so renowned for the quickest proficiency in that art.
I am assured by our merchants, that a boy or a girl before twelve years old is no salable commodity; and even when they come to this age they will not yield above three pounds, or three pounds and half-a-crown at most on the exchange; which cannot turn to account either to the parents or kingdom, the charge of nutriment and rags having been at least four times that value.
I shall now therefore humbly propose my own thoughts, which I hope will not be liable to the least objection.
I have been assured by a very knowing American of my acquaintance in London, that a young healthy child well nursed is at a year old a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled; and I make no doubt that it will equally serve in a fricassee or a ragout.
I do therefore humbly offer it to public consideration that of the hundred and twenty thousand children already computed, twenty thousand may be reserved for breed, whereof only one-fourth part to be males; which is more than we allow to sheep, black cattle or swine; and my reason is, that these children are seldom the fruits of marriage, a circumstance not much regarded by our savages, therefore one male will be sufficient to serve four females. That the remaining hundred thousand may, at a year old, be offered in the sale to the persons of quality and fortune through the kingdom; always advising the mother to let them suck plentifully in the last month, so as to render them plump and fat for a good table. A child will make two dishes at an entertainment for friends; and when the family dines alone, the fore or hind quarter will make a reasonable dish, and seasoned with a little pepper or salt will be very good boiled on the fourth day, especially in winter.
I have reckoned upon a medium that a child just born will weigh 12 pounds, and in a solar year, if tolerably nursed, increaseth to 28 pounds.
I grant this food will be somewhat dear, and therefore very proper for landlords, who, as they have already devoured most of the parents, seem to have the best title to the children.
Infant's flesh will be in season throughout the year, but more plentiful in March, and a little before and after; for we are told by a grave author, an eminent French physician, that fish being a prolific diet, there are more children born in Roman Catholic countries about nine months after Lent than at any other season; therefore, reckoning a year after Lent, the markets will be more glutted than usual, because the number of popish infants is at least three to one in this kingdom: and therefore it will have one other collateral advantage, by lessening the number of papists among us.
I have already computed the charge of nursing a beggar's child (in which list I reckon all cottagers, laborers, and four-fifths of the farmers) to be about two shillings per annum, rags included; and I believe no gentleman would repine to give ten shillings for the carcass of a good fat child, which, as I have said, will make four dishes of excellent nutritive meat, when he hath only some particular friend or his own family to dine with him. Thus the squire will learn to be a good landlord, and grow popular among his tenants; the mother will have eight shillings net profit, and be fit for work till she produces another child.
Those who are more thrifty (as I must confess the times require) may flay the carcass; the skin of which artificially dressed will make admirable gloves for ladies, and summer boots for fine gentlemen.
As to our city of Dublin, shambles may be appointed for this purpose in the most convenient parts of it, and butchers we may be assured will not be wanting; although I rather recommend buying the children alive, and dressing them hot from the knife, as we do roasting pigs.
A very worthy person, a true lover of his country, and whose virtues I highly esteem, was lately pleased in discoursing on this matter to offer a refinement upon my scheme. He said that many gentlemen of this kingdom, having of late destroyed their deer, he conceived that the want of venison might be well supplied by the bodies of young lads and maidens, not exceeding fourteen years of age nor under twelve; so great a number of both sexes in every country being now ready to starve for want of work and service; and these to be disposed of by their parents, if alive, or otherwise by their nearest relations. But with due deference to so excellent a friend and so deserving a patriot, I cannot be altogether in his sentiments; for as to the males, my American acquaintance assured me, from frequent experience, that their flesh was generally tough and lean, like that of our schoolboys by continual exercise, and their taste disagreeable; and to fatten them would not answer the charge. Then as to the females, it would, I think, with humble submission be a loss to the public, because they soon would become breeders themselves; and besides, it is not improbable that some scrupulous people might be apt to censure such a practice (although indeed very unjustly), as a little bordering upon cruelty; which, I confess, hath always been with me the strongest objection against any project, however so well intended.
But in order to justify my friend, he confessed that this expedient was put into his head by the famous Psalmanazar, a native of the island Formosa, who came from thence to London above twenty years ago, and in conversation told my friend, that in his country when any young person happened to be put to death, the executioner sold the carcass to persons of quality as a prime dainty; and that in his time the body of a plump girl of fifteen, who was crucified for an attempt to poison the emperor, was sold to his imperial majesty's prime minister of state, and other great mandarins of the court, in joints from the gibbet, at four hundred crowns. Neither indeed can I deny, that if the same use were made of several plump young girls in this town, who without one single groat to their fortunes cannot stir abroad without a chair, and appear at playhouse and assemblies in foreign fineries which they never will pay for, the kingdom would not be the worse.
Some persons of a desponding spirit are in great concern about that vast number of poor people, who are aged, diseased, or maimed, and I have been desired to employ my thoughts what course may be taken to ease the nation of so grievous an encumbrance. But I am not in the least pain upon that matter, because it is very well known that they are every day dying and rotting by cold and famine, and filth and vermin, as fast as can be reasonably expected. And as to the young laborers, they are now in as hopeful a condition; they cannot get work, and consequently pine away for want of nourishment, to a degree that if at any time they are accidentally hired to common labor, they have not strength to perform it; and thus the country and themselves are happily delivered from the evils to come.
I have too long digressed, and therefore shall return to my subject. I think the advantages by the proposal which I have made are obvious and many, as well as of the highest importance.
For first, as I have already observed, it would greatly lessen the number of papists, with whom we are yearly overrun, being the principal breeders of the nation as well as our most dangerous enemies; and who stay at home on purpose with a design to deliver the kingdom to the Pretender, hoping to take their advantage by the absence of so many good protestants, who have chosen rather to leave their country than stay at home and pay tithes against their conscience to an episcopal curate.
Secondly, The poorer tenants will have something valuable of their own, which by law may be made liable to distress and help to pay their landlord's rent, their corn and cattle being already seized, and money a thing unknown.
Thirdly, Whereas the maintenance of an hundred thousand children, from two years old and upward, cannot be computed at less than ten shillings a-piece per annum, the nation's stock will be thereby increased fifty thousand pounds per annum, beside the profit of a new dish introduced to the tables of all gentlemen of fortune in the kingdom who have any refinement in taste. And the money will circulate among ourselves, the goods being entirely of our own growth and manufacture.
Fourthly, The constant breeders, beside the gain of eight shillings sterling per annum by the sale of their children, will be rid of the charge of maintaining them after the first year.
Fifthly, This food would likewise bring great custom to taverns; where the vintners will certainly be so prudent as to procure the best receipts for dressing it to perfection, and consequently have their houses frequented by all the fine gentlemen, who justly value themselves upon their knowledge in good eating: and a skilful cook, who understands how to oblige his guests, will contrive to make it as expensive as they please.
Sixthly, This would be a great inducement to marriage, which all wise nations have either encouraged by rewards or enforced by laws and penalties. It would increase the care and tenderness of mothers toward their children, when they were sure of a settlement for life to the poor babes, provided in some sort by the public, to their annual profit instead of expense. We should see an honest emulation among the married women, which of them could bring the fattest child to the market. Men would become as fond of their wives during the time of their pregnancy as they are now of their mares in foal, their cows in calf, their sows when they are ready to farrow; nor offer to beat or kick them (as is too frequent a practice) for fear of a miscarriage.
Many other advantages might be enumerated. For instance, the addition of some thousand carcasses in our exportation of barreled beef, the propagation of swine's flesh, and improvement in the art of making good bacon, so much wanted among us by the great destruction of pigs, too frequent at our tables; which are no way comparable in taste or magnificence to a well-grown, fat, yearling child, which roasted whole will make a considerable figure at a lord mayor's feast or any other public entertainment. But this and many others I omit, being studious of brevity.
Supposing that one thousand families in this city, would be constant customers for infants flesh, besides others who might have it at merry meetings, particularly at weddings and christenings, I compute that Dublin would take off annually about twenty thousand carcasses; and the rest of the kingdom (where probably they will be sold somewhat cheaper) the remaining eighty thousand.
I can think of no one objection, that will possibly be raised against this proposal, unless it should be urged, that the number of people will be thereby much lessened in the kingdom. This I freely own, and 'twas indeed one principal design in offering it to the world. I desire the reader will observe, that I calculate my remedy for this one individual Kingdom of Ireland, and for no other that ever was, is, or, I think, ever can be upon Earth. Therefore let no man talk to me of other expedients: Of taxing our absentees at five shillings a pound: Of using neither cloaths, nor houshold furniture, except what is of our own growth and manufacture: Of utterly rejecting the materials and instruments that promote foreign luxury: Of curing the expensiveness of pride, vanity, idleness, and gaming in our women: Of introducing a vein of parsimony, prudence and temperance: Of learning to love our country, wherein we differ even from Laplanders, and the inhabitants of Topinamboo: Of quitting our animosities and factions, nor acting any longer like the Jews, who were murdering one another at the very moment their city was taken: Of being a little cautious not to sell our country and consciences for nothing: Of teaching landlords to have at least one degree of mercy towards their tenants. Lastly, of putting a spirit of honesty, industry, and skill into our shop-keepers, who, if a resolution could now be taken to buy only our native goods, would immediately unite to cheat and exact upon us in the price, the measure, and the goodness, nor could ever yet be brought to make one fair proposal of just dealing, though often and earnestly invited to it.
Therefore I repeat, let no man talk to me of these and the like expedients, 'till he hath at least some glympse of hope, that there will ever be some hearty and sincere attempt to put them into practice.
But, as to my self, having been wearied out for many years with offering vain, idle, visionary thoughts, and at length utterly despairing of success, I fortunately fell upon this proposal, which, as it is wholly new, so it hath something solid and real, of no expence and little trouble, full in our own power, and whereby we can incur no danger in disobliging England. For this kind of commodity will not bear exportation, and flesh being of too tender a consistence, to admit a long continuance in salt, although perhaps I could name a country, which would be glad to eat up our whole nation without it.
After all, I am not so violently bent upon my own opinion as to reject any offer proposed by wise men, which shall be found equally innocent, cheap, easy, and effectual. But before something of that kind shall be advanced in contradiction to my scheme, and offering a better, I desire the author or authors will be pleased maturely to consider two points. First, as things now stand, how they will be able to find food and raiment for an hundred thousand useless mouths and backs. And secondly, there being a round million of creatures in human figure throughout this kingdom, whose whole subsistence put into a common stock would leave them in debt two millions of pounds sterling, adding those who are beggars by profession to the bulk of farmers, cottagers, and laborers, with their wives and children who are beggars in effect: I desire those politicians who dislike my overture, and may perhaps be so bold as to attempt an answer, that they will first ask the parents of these mortals, whether they would not at this day think it a great happiness to have been sold for food, at a year old in the manner I prescribe, and thereby have avoided such a perpetual scene of misfortunes as they have since gone through by the oppression of landlords, the impossibility of paying rent without money or trade, the want of common sustenance, with neither house nor clothes to cover them from the inclemencies of the weather, and the most inevitable prospect of entailing the like or greater miseries upon their breed for ever.
I profess, in the sincerity of my heart, that I have not the least personal interest in endeavoring to promote this necessary work, having no other motive than the public good of my country, by advancing our trade, providing for infants, relieving the poor, and giving some pleasure to the rich. I have no children by which I can propose to get a single penny; the youngest being nine years old, and my wife past child-bearing.
The End

Chemistry Online Practical!!

hey guys,

this muz b completed during the CNY week.

1. This journal that you are about to read is on the man named Tat. Although he is not gg to be struck by a nuclear bomb, what ever that is gg to hit him is 10 to 20 times worse den being struck by a nuclear explosion head on.. That is to unexpectedly get 4 kids before marriage and before the enlistment age. So if you do some calculations he was a father around 13..and dis please the 2 Elder Lees a great deal. Do You prefer a plain ole' tee, polo or a baseball jersey( in case the common tee is too bourgeois for your liking)? The tentative design is a white tee with dark grey and yellow prints. Any kind suggestions? Personalising it with a number or a name will raise the cost a lil' but it'll definitely be more meaningful. Worth the money? We might talk and stuff during breaks but that's really not much interaction so here's the dirty on the main man of 04s7c:

1) Tat Chong's hot stuff in class...esp among the guys...oh man u guys shld haf been there last yr when we were still in our sec sch Us...tat had super tight chinese high shorts wooh did his ass look HOT! Evrybody wants a piece of that haha but tat always fights off evry guy's advances...he's really into this one girl, his other half...

2) Tat has a wife and 4 children with one more on the way (looks like it's been on the way for 13 mths tho :p) He has lotsa household expenses like diapers, formula, stuff like that...that's why he's always so thrifty in sch, nvr eating out wif the guys at coro...that plate of lemon chicken rice at tender means tat jr will haf to use cheap cloth for his nappy...

3) Tat has a few fav phrases.
"Stop this, will you?" - Why he finds "stop this will you" easier to say than "will you stop this" or plain "stop it" i dunno but he's the only bugger who does it and it's q funny. Btw he says that when u do some funny stuff to him.

"Wo na dao tong ni cai jiang 'Sorry"" (literally: i take knife stab you then say sorry) - This one is really funny, aft u do sth stupid like whack his ass and then apologise he'll still be really angry and give u this one. He does it with lively animation and gusto...try it! Haha it's a bonus if he adds the finger (index) pointing action.

"Tamade" - Tat Chong's a really well-mannered guy...he nvr evr curses or swears! As amazing as it is, i've yet to hear anything remotely crude or vulgar frm him..."tamade" is as far as he goes and he doesn't even use it that often.

"You need intensive counselling. 24/7" - If you keep up doing funny stuff to him that's wad he says most of the time + finger action again.

"You're hopeless already lor.
